An Appeal to Match a Grant
To Complete Construction of a Dormitory for Women for Meserete Kristos College
The Challenge: An anonymous supporting couple, desiring to see the speedy completion of construction of the dormitory for women, have committed themselves to match any gift received dollar for dollar up to Can. $200,000 (US $150,000) for that purpose over the period ending on September 30th!
Background: Since the founding of MK College, there have always been a few females among the student body. Though few in number, our female graduates have been serving faithfully in women’s ministries, in prison ministries, in humanitarian service organizations, as Bible teachers, as editors, as prayer coordinators, as evangelists, and even as pastors.
Need: While the men are housed in a very adequate dormitory, college women live in temporary conditions on the fifth floor of the Academic Building designed for classrooms and offices. A dormitory for women is essential for increasing the male/female ratio to 50% as demand dictates. In a Church ministering to over 500,000 adherents, this will be the first and only Christian College offering dormitory accommodations for women.
Steps Taken: After approval by the Board five years ago and many years of planning and fund raising, on February 24, 2015, ground was broken and construction began on a dormitory designed to accommodate 258 female students. The contract completion date is April 28, 2017.
Estimated Cost: US $1,061,233. Of this 2/3rds or $677,700 have been collected. $383,533 are still needed. With the generous offer of a matching grant of up to Cdn. $200,000 (US $150,000), we believe, with your help, we can match the grant and close the gap and complete the dormitory on schedule.
Projected Outcomes: It will enable the College: to accommodate up to 258 women; to launch new programs in the liberal arts fields; to free up office and classroom space; and to provide more space to accommodate conferences, seminars, short courses, etc., for both sexes from the working public.
Opportunity: Now this Canadian couple, long-time friends of the Mennonite presence in Ethiopia have generously offered to pay half the shortfall IF WE CAN RAISE THE OTHER HALF BEFORE SEPTEBER 30! We urgently need your participation! Please help us with a generous gift beyond what you normally send for scholarship and operating support!
